Observation Narrative
Plot location: Depression W Marsh just N of an upland edge, ca 0.8 miles NW of the VA/NC line where it crosses the Northwest River. Plot center marked with a 1" white PVC pipe.
Water 4-8cm deep.
Slightly vertically concave.
A floating/ emergent wetland of mucky depressions and shallow pools in the Northwest River marshes. This community type appears to occur primarily in association with short- to medium-statured interior marshes. Nymphaea odorata dominates in dense mats which are stunningly beautiful when fully flowering in mass. These pods, or some of them, may be the result of peat burns which occurred during intense wildfires.
